Chuckling Cephlapods Batman!

Giggling Squid has arrived at St Martin’s Square Leicester! Tonight they celebrated with a preview night for guests, where we got to take a look around the new restaurant. The thai ‘tapas’ concept has been running for nearly 20 years and they now have around 35 restaurants around the country.

Bringing rustic fresh Thai food in a simple, shareable way is what the menu is all about. Everything we saw was full of typical thai flavours – chilli, lemongrass, lime, coriander, galangal and so forth. The balances of sweet, sour, salty and spicy were there, but everything was relatively mild, so suitable for all palates. You could certainly spice it up more though.

Through the evening, tasters from the menu were brought out for us to enjoy. One of the Giggling Squid signature dishes is the salt and pepper squid, which is served with a sticky, sweet chilli sauce. This was an absolute star, it’s easy to see why it is popular. Soft and tender squid, with a perfect crispy coating and the sweet chilli matching the sweetness of the seafood.

Also, we enjoyed lots of aromatic bursts of flavour. Highlights for me were the lemongrass and coconut notes of the chicken skewers, the combination of lightly sweet and savoury in the chicken and vegetable money bags. There were also particularly flavourful chicken and duck ‘spoons’ – bursts of flavour on an edible spoon cracker which were lots of fun as well as tasty.

Vegan and vegetarian options abounded, along with gluten free options. Of course, this was a lot of canape style food really, so doesn’t give a fantastic indication of what a sit down meal at the restaurant would be like, but it has whetted my appetite to return. I am a big fan of Thai flavours and I really like what I have seen so far. Just like the fresh, aromatic flavours, the restaurant itself is light, airy and floral. Rather than being assertively ‘Thai’ in style, it is open and verdant in decoration. Slightly ambiguous, but in that also welcoming and inclusive. Similarly the music is contemporary and Western, giving a modern vibe to the venue.

We had an incredibly warm welcome and met some really genuinely interesting and interested staff. I look forward to returning and seeing what they have to offer in terms of service for a full meal.

First impressions are very positive and I look forward to heading back. Thanks to Giggling Squid for inviting me to this complimentary preview event.

    • Thanks Jim. I wasn’t 100% happy with my pictures last night, I must have had something up from my settings from photographing Van Gogh the day before. Perhaps they’ll invite me back for dinner for another go!! :D
